Coleslaw is primarily made out of cabbage and has a creamy vinegar dressing on the top that transforms the cabbage into a wonderful tangy salad. I made this spicy coleslaw recipe to go add to my shrimp taco recipe that I posted and decided I needed to share it. It is sweet and spicy for the sriracha I add and some cilantro that gives it another layer to the flavor. It’s a type of salad that is great for a picnic or just to munch on in the middle of the day.
This coleslaw recipe is my mother’s recipe and I doctored it up to give it a little kick. Adding some spice to the coleslaw is amazing and it is so simple to make. You can add as much or little of the sriracha as you please to give it the kick you like. I prefer mine a little spicier than some, so start light on the sriracha and add more if you desire.
There are very few ingredients needed for this spicy coleslaw recipe, but so many variations. Some like to use just vinegar others add more spices. In the end it’s the cabbage and vinegar that make a coleslaw. I haven’t a slaw that I didn’t like, it’s all in the flavors you prefer. Below is the list of ingredients I use for my spicy coleslaw.
Ingredients needed:
- Cabbage
- Carrot
- Green onion
- Sriracha
- Mayonnaise or plain yogurt
- Sugar (artificial sweetener if needed)
- Fresh cilantro
- Apple cider vinegar
It doesn’t matter what kind of vinegar to use but I wouldn’t use balsamic for this recipe. I like apple vinegar in my coleslaw recipe. White vinegar would be good also. Whatever you have in the house would be fine. My mom taught me to use what I have. No need to go buy something special if you can substitue and utilize what is a available to you.
The other half of cabbage that you don’t use will save for some time in the refrigerator. There are lots of recipes that you could try to use it up. I will post some others later. I like to chop it up and put in a skillet with some onion and fry it. Of course, if you add bacon to it then it’s even better. everything is better with bacon.
Serving Suggestions:
- I put it on my shrimp tacos
- Good on fish tacos
- I’ve piled it on top of a pulled pork sandwich
- Or have it as a side at a barbeque is wonderful.
This is a recipe that goes a long way and is great as a leftover the next day or two. It’s not that unhealthy either, you can use substitute the sugar and mayo by using artificial sweeteners and yogurt instead of mayo.
