Living in the Pacific Northwest we get a lot of Dungeness crab. For me, there isn’t anything better than fresh crab and of course, Dungeness crab is my favorite. One of my favorite things to make with crab is this open-face crab sandwich. This crab sandwich is so simple to make and has so much flavor. If you have crab and looking for a good sandwich this is it.
An open-face crab sandwich is such a great choice for a luncheon with friends or a main course for dinner. They’re going to enjoy the savory flavor of the crab with a little kick from the chili pepper flakes that I like to put in mine. The fresh crab taste salty from the sea and sweet. When you combine all the ingredients together you come up with this fabulous crab sandwich.
This open-face crab sandwich is so simple and quick to make. The most time-consuming is cracking the crab if you’re lucky enough to get it straight from the sea as I do. I have to say that it’s worth every minute. Of course, you can get your crab already cracked at most grocery stores or in the shell.

Every crab has a distinct take of its own but is equally as delicious. It’s your preference on what you like and of course what you have available in your neck of the woods. Crab isn’t cheap so when purchasing this in the stores so there are other options. You can also use other seafood like:
You can also use other seafood like:
- Lobster
- Shrimp
- Prawns
- Fish
- I have also used imitation crab if you’re really on a budget.
Any of these choices would be delicious for this open-face sandwich. I use whatever is available at the time. And it depends on what you like the best. I am a seafood lover so any of them work for me. The flavors would be very similar. Make sure the seafood you use is fresh. There should not be a real fishy smell to any seafood you use. Seafood has a sweet-salty flavor, not fishy.
Preparing your seafood is important. Whatever you decide to use it needs to be cooked prior to making the sandwich. Most crab you buy at the store is already cooked. If you decide to use any other seafood other than crab, be sure to cook it first. I like to use leftover seafood when I make this sandwich. I am a leftover pro. That seems to be my specialty. No waste in my house is how I was raised.
Well, here you go another amazing dish from my kitchen to yours. I hope you enjoy it as much as my friends and family do. I don’t think this open-face crab sandwich recipe will let you down.
