OMG are these sweet potatoes cooked on the Big Green Egg are so delicious. Cooking them on the Big Green Egg gives them a wonderful smokey flavor. The silkiness of the sweet potato with the zest from the lemon is the most delightful combination.

I love sweet potatoes, they are such a healthy substitute for white potatoes and they have so much more flavor. I amped up the flavor even more by grilling these babies over some hot smokey flames. The Big Green Egg gives these sweet potatoes an amazing smokey flavor.

Cooking on the grill is my favorite way to cook. It’s so nice to be outside while preparing meals. And there is less of a mess in the kitchen to clean up, which is always a treat.

Sweet potatoes can be cooked many ways and if you don’t have a green egg grill, you can use any kind of outdoor grill that you have. You could also just cook them in the oven or on the stove top. The flavors will be very similar. The smokiness from the Hibachi grill won’t be there but the flavors will still be amazing.

Sweet potatoes have many health benefits:

They are high in antioxidants and an excellent source of beta carotene, vitamin C, and potassium. Besides all the other vitamins and minerals.

What to serve with sweet potatoes:

Sweet potatoes go well with any type of protein. Chicken, beef, and pork are popular choices but they also go well with fish. If you want to make a meatless meal, serve them with black beans, lentils, or chickpeas. They are also good in casseroles, stews or roasted in the oven with a pot roast and other vegetables.

Sweet potatoes are good eaten alone. I could make a meal with these grilled sweet potatoes.

How hot should my grill be?

You want the grill to be at medium heat. Are you wondering what medium heat is? Medium heat is about 350°F. Since not all grills have a thermometer I have a tip for you to guestimate what temperature your grill is at.

Hold your hand about 5 inches above the grill, count how many seconds you can keep it there comfortably. If you can keep your hand there for 3 to 4 seconds then the grill is most likely at 350°F. However, if you can hold your hand there for longer than 4 seconds you should heat the grill up further.

Now, if you want to be more accurate then you can buy an inexpensive oven/grill thermometer. Just stick that on the grill and close the lid. It will tell you exactly when your grill is hot enough. No guessing.

How to make grilled sweet potatoes:

These smokey, ultra-silky sweet potatoes are not only simple to make, but they are also incredibly inexpensive. They are a great addition to a healthy budget meal.

You will need:

  • 2 sweet potatoes
  • butter
  • 1 lemon
  • brown sugar
  • salt and pepper

Get the grill hot:

Get your outdoor grill ready. I used my Big Green Egg but you could use any kind of Hibachi grill or even a gas grill. You just have to know your particular grill and remember the cooking time difference.

Slice the sweet potatoes:

Take one to two sweet potatoes depending on how many people you want to serve and slice them into 1/4 inch thick sections then put them on a sheet of aluminum foil.

Add the seasonings and flavors:

Add a tablespoon of butter to the top and a couple of tablespoons of brown sugar.  Squeeze half a lemon on the top and sprinkle with ground black pepper.

Lay the lemon on the top and place on the hot grill.  Keep the foil open so the sweet potatoes will take in some of the smoke.

Get grillin’:

These take about a half hour to cook on medium heat. If you have a grill thermometer then medium heat is about 350°F.  You don’t want it too hot or they’ll burn. You can keep it on low and just cook them a little longer if you have other things to do but don’t get the grill any hotter.
